A Gainesville woman who shot and killed a suspect on Sunday is believed to have acted in self-defense.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting took place Sunday afternoon in the area of 7700 SW Fourth Place, just west of Tower Road.

In an email to The Sun, ACSO Capt. Chris Sims wrote that the shooter was detained and identified as a resident of the house where the shooting took place. Sims added that detectives interviewed several witnesses in the house and in the neighborhood.

“Due to our Detectives and the State Attorney’s Office having a preliminary finding that this act appears to be in self-defense, the subject who was originally detained has since been released,” Sims wrote.

The investigation remains active and no further information was provided.
