Friends, family grieve loss of Greensboro man after fatal motorcycle crash: ‘Still doesn’t feel real’

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — As the weather is getting warmer, more motorcycles will be on the road.

In the Piedmont Triad, FOX8 has reported on three fatal motorcycle crashes since Saturday. One was in Kernersville, one was in Winston-Salem and one was in Greensboro.

FOX8 spoke to the brother of 34-year-old Marc Schmitt. He says this news has been devastating.

Marc and Eric Schmitt met every Sunday at Jake’s Billiards. By 1 p.m. on any given Sunday, you could expect to find the brothers in a booth.

In a conversation over the phone, Eric said that when his brother didn’t show up on time Sunday afternoon, his stomach dropped, and he knew something was wrong.

At 12:40 p.m., while going to meet his brother for their weekly lunch, Marc had been in an accident on West Friendly Avenue.

Marc was on his beloved Harley Davidson going east in the left lane on West Friendly Avenue when Greensboro police say a minivan crossed traffic from Lindley Lane. This is when officers say the motorcycle was hit by the left side of the minivan.

Marc died on the scene.

John Nosek, his friend of 15 years, said that when he heard the news, he didn’t want to believe it.

“He’s 34 years old. This isn’t what happens … He’s been riding bikes for 10 plus years. It wasn’t real. It still doesn’t feel real,” Nosek said.

Eric said his brother was a talented motorcyclist. It didn’t matter if it was raining, snowing or the sun was shining, Marc was on his bike.

Nosek says this is a great loss for the Greensboro community.

“I just hope that everyone remembers the amount of joy that he always had,” Nosek said.

He hopes it’s a reminder for drivers to pay attention.

“Motorcycles get lost in traffic with distracted driving … The blessing of a Harley is that it’s loud … more so to let other people know it’s on the road,” Nosek said.

Marc was a brother, a partner and a friend to many.

No charges have been filed in the crash. Greensboro police say it is still under investigation.
