LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Former Lansing Everett boys and girls basketball coach Johnny Jones passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 75.

Jones led Lansing Everett’s basketball teams to three state championships, two with the girls teams in 2000 and 2001, and another with the boys team in 2004.

Jones coached for 32 years, coaching girls basketball in the fall and boys basketball in the winter until he gave up the boys in 2007 when the seasons began playing at the same time.

Jones was remembered fondly by two former area coaches whose lives he touched.

“Coach Jones was huge to not only to myself but to so many who came in contact with him over the years,” former Everett player and coach Desmond Ferguson told News 10’s Fred Heumann today. “Whether you played for him or just a student in the hallways, he treated everybody the same.”

“Selfless, you know, that’s who he is, what he’s about,” former Lansing Sexton coach Carlton Valentine said. “He obviously taught the game of basketball and baseball, but more importantly, the game of life. He taught us so many life lessons that we still use and cherish to this day.”
