Back in 2022, Mark and Kelly Rubin came across an alluring South Carolina home on John’s Island, just 10 miles outside Downtown Charleston. They were immediately enamored with the property’s picturesque locale amid stately moss-draped oak trees overlooking the Stono River and surrounding marshes, as well as its many amenities—a 150-foot tidal dock with canoe and water sport platforms, a pool and spa, and a guesthouse, just to name a few.

The couple—he a commercial real estate executive and she an interior designer, and both avid believers of getting creative with spaces rather than starting from scratch—went on to purchase the 2008-built residence for $4 million and then embarked upon an extensive renovation and expansion in collaboration with local architect Beau Clowney. Now, three years later, they’re putting the fully transformed estate on the market with Mary Lou Wertz of Maison Real Estate for a smidge under $6.2 million.

The open-concept design seamlessly integrates the kitchen with the dining area and a screened-in porch equipped with a summer kitchen.

Not only did the pair wind up adding more than 2,000 square feet, but they also worked diligently to ensure that each room suited a specific purpose or desire. “Everything is connected, and we take great pride in the fact that all the different vignettes in the house serve your life,” said Mark in a statement, adding that when it comes to him and his wife, they are the ideal combination of form and substance. “Together, we have both bases covered.”

Nestled on over an acre bordering the western edge of the exclusive Rushland Landing community and securely protected by a new alarm system, the reimagined retreat features a main home and a guesthouse, for a total of five bedrooms and six baths in around 6,000 square feet of elegant living space on three levels boasting refinished hardwood floors throughout. Numerous French doors also open to covered and enclosed patios and porches ideally suited to perhaps cooking up a delicious Lowcountry boil in the summer kitchen, or maybe partaking in a game of ping-pong or cornhole.

Multiple porches overlook sweeping views of the Stono River and surrounding marshland.

Upon entering the white wood-sided and brick structure, an entry foyer immediately reveals river and marsh vistas. Off to the side is a living room sporting a fireplace adorned with a marble surround, while a window-lined dining room connects to a gourmet kitchen outfitted with custom cabinetry, an expansive marble-topped island, a wine cooler, and high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. An accompanying scullery hides away double ovens, a second dishwasher, and several refrigerators.

Two separate wings include one accommodating a spacious primary suite flaunting a sunroom, a bespoke walk-in closet, and a luxurious bath, and another holding a cozy den, a large laundry and utility room, an elevator, and a pool bath. And down on the lower level, a sprawling entertainment area painted in a shade of dark blue comes complete with billiard and game tables, a granite wet bar, and a media room.

The lower-level entertainment space has a a full wet bar, a game area, and a media room.

Not to be left out are the picturesque grounds, which are strewn with moss-laden oak trees and host an Ipe wood sundeck encircling an elevated pool and spillover spa encased in stone. There’s also an updated 150-foot tidal dock on the Stono River equipped with dual canoe and water sport platforms. A tidal creek flows to Charleston Harbor and the Intracoastal Waterway, where boating and fishing opportunities abound.

Rounding it all out is a separate one-bedroom, one-bath guesthouse that has its own living area and kitchenette, along with an air-conditioned golf cart garage and workshop, plus a three-car garage equipped with an EV charger. A $1,818 annual association fee also allows the homeowners to use Rushland Landing’s shared amenities, which include a dock, a pavilion, a pool, a playground, and a meandering cart path connecting the neighbors.
