PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) – A 42-year-old Saraland man is charged with first-degree assault following a shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Baldwin Drive this morning.

Witnesses say a man was shot in the hip. According to the MCSO, the victim was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Demetrius Andrews was identified as the alleged shooter. Witnesses and surveillance video from a nearby business helped in the identification, authorities said.

According to the MCSO, Andrews confessed to the shooting but told detectives it was self-defense.

However, a witness told investigators that that she and Andrews had a fight, authorities said. After walking away and crossing the street, the victim asked if she was all right. When Andrews saw her speaking with the victim, Andrews threatened him and and the two men got into a fight, which the witness broke up, according to investigators.

Andrews left but then allegedly returned with a weapon, shot the victim, and fled, according to MCSO investigators.

Andrews was booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail this afternoon and has a bond hearing scheduled next week, jail records show.
