FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WSMV) – Tuesday update: The Franklin Police Department is now investigating a self-defense claim from Monday afternoon’s shooting in the 1400 block of West Main Street.

FPD reports that at about 3 p.m., officers responded to the Discount Tobacco Outlet for reports of a shooting. As they arrived, officers found 44-year-old Jeremy Scruggs, of Franklin, who was shot in the leg.

Scruggs was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injury. Shortly after, officers discovered the shooting took place outside Jewel’s Market in the 1400 block of West Main Street, and Scruggs had walked to the tobacco store before their arrival.

The shooting stemmed from an altercation between Scruggs and 29-year-old D’marcus Lee, also of Franklin. FPD reports that surveillance video shows Lee pulled his pistol during an altercation and shot Scruggs before leaving the area.

Just before 5 p.m., Lee turned himself in to FPD. During questioning, FPD said that Lee told detectives that Scruggs had assaulted him as he attempted to enter the store. He said the altercation then made its way into the parking lot, where he said he had no choice but to shoot Scruggs.

“Following the interview, Lee was released. At this time, he has not been arrested, nor has he been charged with any crime. The case remains under investigation by the Franklin Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office,” FPD said.
