WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs employee involved in the shooting death of her “domestic partner” Wednesday morning told Waco police she was acting in self-defense, according to court documents.
The 52-year-old woman, who spoke voluntarily to police after reporting the shooting about 6:15 a.m., said she and Christan Chae Walker were involved in an argument and both of them pulled firearms, an affidavit for search warrants obtained by Waco police alleges.
The woman admitted firing her gun at Walker, who is described in affidavits as her 51-year-old “domestic partner.”
Police investigators obtained warrants to search the contents of the woman’s phone and for residences at 104 Apple Lane, where the woman reported the shooting, and 102 Apple Lane, where the shooting occurred.
Walker was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Waco police continue to investigate the incident. KWTX is not identifying the woman because she has not been arrested.
In cases involving possible self-defense claims, police often present the results of their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office as “screening cases.” Those cases frequently are presented to a grand jury to see if there is sufficient evidence for an indictment or if grand jury members believe the suspect has a valid self-defense claim and should be cleared of wrongdoing.
The woman told police there are messages on her phone that “would support how aggressive she was describing” Walker.”(The woman) said that Christan regularly threatened, cursed and treated her poorly,” an affidavit alleges. “… I have viewed an immense message log with swearing and aggressive conversation from Christan to her. (The woman) also had taken photographs of firearms, weapons and drugs of Christan’s and hid them in her phone. (The woman) said that she did this so that Christan would not find them and assault her, but she knew that the images could be very important should anything happen to her.”
