‘This is so sad. My daughter and I just discovered this oasis two seasons ago and enjoyed every chance we got to go,’ one person wrote in response to the closure.
PENINSULA, Ohio — With the 2025 summer season right around the corner, one local swimming hole — the Peninsula Quarry at 1980 West Streetsboro Road in Peninsula — confirmed this week that it’s closing and shutting down operations.
“With deep sadness we announce we will not open this season,” according to a Facebook post on the Peninsula Quarry’s page. “Thank you Quarry patrons for allowing me to serve you for the last 10 years. There are many things I wanted to do and couldn’t, but I certainly tried.”
Their post — which generated dozens of comments from some sharing memories to others expressing sadness — also included one person asking what needs to be done while suggesting “maybe everyone can pull together to help.”
But the Quarry’s offered this response:
“The land owners are not renewing our lease and have asked us to remove all of our items from the property. I have advocated for the quarry and solved many issues that blocked our progress, but I don’t own the land and I can’t force a private land owner to lease to us.”
When asked if there might be a “last picnic to say goodbye,” the Quarry’s page responded and said: “Unfortunately no. We will be out within a week.”
The Peninsula Quarry’s site described their spot as an “old-school swimming hole in the hart of the Cuyahoga River Valley.”
Here’s some of the reaction about the closure as posted in the comments on the Quarry’s post:
- “This is tragic. Crying in my cubicle. Thank you for the memories. So much love for this truly special spot. Happy to have gotten to experience it for the last 18 years. Rip”
- “This is so sad. My daughter and I just discovered this oasis two seasons ago and enjoyed every chance we got to go. Beautiful place, beautiful people. Thank you for everything”
- “grateful for all you (and all the volunteers) have done over the years. It is a cherished spot that will live forever in my heart Thank you!!”
- “Thank you for the memories.”
- “Thank you for all your efforts and the great memories of this special, unique place!”
- “Thank you for the memories and thank you for all of the effort you put in”
- “Started swimming there in 1957. My summers were spent there, making so many wonderful memories & wonderful friends. So sad to see it close…..”
