The League of American Bicyclists awarded the city for its increased commitment to pro-bike policies and infrastructure.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The League of American Bicyclists named the City of Spokane as a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award.

The award recognizes the city’s commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit its residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices.

“We are honored to accept the silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community award after being at bronze since 2010. This milestone reflects the progress Spokane has made through prioritizing infrastructure improvements and investing in initiatives that make our city safer for cyclists,” said City of Spokane Planner Colin Quinn-Hurst.

Spokane joins 460 communities across the country in the movement for safer streets and better bicycling for everyone.

“Finding ways to build and maintain infrastructure to support multiple transportation options for our community is a welcome challenge for our Public Works team; this designation supports our team and the work they do,” said City of Spokane Public Works Director Marlene Feist.

Some recent projects the city has invested in for bike-friendly infrastructure include:

  • Post Street Bridge
  • Riverside Avenue
  • South Gorge Loop Trail
  • Centennial Trail Connection on Summit
  • Cincinnati Greenway
  • Garland Avenue Pathway
  • Spokane Falls Boulevard protected bike lanes from Front Street to Cincinnati
  • Purchase of dedicated sweeper and snow plow equipment for protected bike lanes
  • Adopting a new Bicycle Parking Ordinance to provide short-term and long-term bicycle parking
  • Identifying a Bicycle Priority Network and Accelerated Mobility Playbook to facilitate future bikeways that accommodate all ages and abilities
  • Continuing to support community biking events such as Bike Everywhere Month, and the Mayor’s Bike to Work Day

“This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our Public Works and Planning departments, who continuously prioritize making our city safer and more accessible for everyone,” Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said.

The city recognizes its several community partners that help make events like the Bike Swap (CommuteSmartNW), the Thursday Night Bike Rides (ShackTown), Summer Parkways and Active Transportation seminars (Spokane Regional Health District) possible.

The City of Spokane is looking forward to additional bike-friendly investments in the near future, including the 27 by 2027 project, which will create a 27-mile network of safe, comfortable, connected bike routes by 2027.
