NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – One person is dead after a reported shooting at a home in Antioch, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The shooting happened in the 100 block of Denise Drive just before 3 a.m. on Sunday.

According to police, they’re investigating a self-defense claim in the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Maurice Blackmun.

Police said a group of friends were returning home from a birthday party when Blackmun was accused of physically assaulting a family member outside the home.

Adrian Harvell, 19, tried to intervene, police said.

Witnesses told police everyone went inside when Blackmun began confronting Harvell. Blackmun allegedly first placed Harvell in a chokehold and then followed him to the living room where he repeatedly threatened violence against him and other witnesses.

Harvell pointed a gun at Blackmun and demanded he get away from him before he fired once, police said.

Police said Blackmun was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene.

No charges have been placed on Harvell in regard to the case, police said.

“The fatal shooting investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office at its conclusion,” police said.
