Nashville police are reviewing a self-defense claim after a man was shot and killed around 3 a.m. Sunday.
An investigation shows a group of friends returned home from a birthday celebration when Maurice Blackmun, 39, physically assaulted a family member outside the Denise Drive residence and a 19-year-old man tried to intervene.
Witnesses told police that everyone went inside the home, where Blackmun confronted the 19-year-old.
Police say Blackmun placed him in a chokehold then followed him to the living room where Blackmun repeatedly threatened violence against him and other witnesses.
The 19-year-old pointed a handgun at Blackmun and demanded Blackmun get away from him, the release said.
The gun fired once and struck Blackmun. He died at the scene.
No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation.
