No. 5 FSU softball will open up play in the Tallahassee Super Regional tonight vs. the Texas Tech Red Raiders, seeking the Seminoles’ 13th trip to the Women’s College World Series:
Game one is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday while Friday’s game will begin at 3 p.m. Both games can be seen on ESPN2. Saturday’s if necessary game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2.
FSU has advanced to the WCWS in four out of the six times it has hosted a Super Regional.
Thursday will be the first time FSU and Texas Tech have met in the postseason. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 4-2, but FSU defeated Texas Tech last season at the JoAnne Graf Classic in Tallahassee.
The main storyline in the Tallahassee Super Regional will be when one of the nation’s top offense takes on one of the best pitchers in the country. FSU faced Nijaree Canady last year while she was at Stanford in the Clearwater Invitational. The Noles had some success against Canady as they tallied four runs on six hits. Jahni Kerr led the way with two hits while current Seminoles Isa Torres, Jaysoni Beachum and Hallie Wacaser each picked up a hit. FSU was one of just six teams to have six or more hits against Canady last season. FSU also has history against Chloe Riassetto who is Texas Tech’s No. 2 pitcher. The Seminoles faced Riassetto in 2023 when she was at Louisiana. Current Seminoles Katie Dack, Jahni Kerr, Hallie Wacaser and Krystina Hartley picked up hits against Riassetto. FSU won the game 10-2 in six innings.
ESPN’s Andrea Adelson wrote a fantastic feature on head coach Lonni Alameda, offering insight into how the Florida State community has rallied around her during her battle with breast cancer:
Alameda got an urgent phone call in June 2024 while she was on the road recruiting. Her younger brother, Aaron, had died suddenly of a heart attack in their native California, two months shy of his 52nd birthday. She immediately flew home to spend time with her mom and dad, as they processed their grief together. The task of cleaning out his apartment fell to her. In between moving boxes, she felt something tweak in her knee.
The pain intensified over the ensuing months until she felt a pop. She underwent knee surgery in early November. For eight weeks, she was not allowed to put any weight on her knee and had to get around using crutches.
On Christmas Eve, Alameda put her crutches under her arms, just like she had done for weeks. But this time, she immediately felt a burning sensation between her armpit and right breast, as if the crutch had punctured something deep inside.
She touched around the area and felt a mass. Unsure whether it was a welt from using the crutches or a breast lump, she called her gynecologist to get the next available appointment. Alameda was up to date on her mammograms, and she never had any issues. This time, though, she had a bad feeling.
In early January, she went in for an ultrasound, which can detect lumps that dense breast tissue sometimes hides during routine mammograms.
“You have a pretty big mass in there,” the technician said.
All Almeda could think was, “My brother, in a weird way, is saving me right now.”
