A proposed policy would allow e-bikes in state forests and parks, and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation wants to hear what you think of it.
People can submit comments on the draft policy through an online form from the department through Nov. 28.
The plan would allow all classes of e-bikes — electric bicycles — on state park roads, Class A and B forest highways, gravel-surfaced Class C forest highways and multi-use trails and other Class C forest highways designated for bicycle use.
Additionally, Class 1 e-bikes would be allowed on natural surface trails designated for bicycle use.
Vermont statute defines electric bicycles as those equipped with fully operable pedals, a saddle or seat for the rider and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. The statute categorizes e-bikes into three classes:
- Class 1: Provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases at 20 mph.
- Class 2: Can be propelled exclusively by the motor and also ceases assistance at 20 mph.
- Class 3: Provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases at 28 mph.
The policy would set an initial 20-mph speed limit on all state park roads, forest highways and multi-use trails.
