The Nebraska volleyball team will make its 2025 debut on Friday when it faces the Pittsburgh Panthers in the opening match of the AVCA First Serve from the Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Huskers enter the 2025 season as the No. 1 team in the country, according to the preseason AVCA poll, while the Panthers enter Friday’s match ranked No. 3 nationally.

Last season, Nebraska finished 33-3 and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals. The Huskers also won their 36th conference title and fifth Big Ten title with a 19-1 record in league play. Juniors Andi Jackson, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly were three of the unanimous selections to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Senior Rebekah Allick was also named to the 20-player squad. The team will also feature some fresh faces, as eight of the 17 players on the 2025 roster are newcomers.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 33-2 record last season and played in its fourth straight national semifinals. Reigning AVCA National Player of the Year Olivia Babcock leads the Panthers, after averaging 4.72 kills per set, with 71 service aces, 1.82 digs per set, and 1.12 blocks per set. Their 2024 season ended in the NCAA Semifinals after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Louisville Cardinals and new Nebraska head coach Dani Busboom Kelly.

The Nebraska native, Busboom Kelly, takes over the Huskers after the retirement of former head coach John Cook. A national champion as a player and assistant coach at Nebraska, Busboom Kelly takes over after spending eight years in charge of the Louisville Cardinals. During her tenure, the Cardinals reached two NCAA Championship matches, three NCAA Semifinals, and won four ACC titles.

The Cornhuskers have never lost to the Panthers and boast a 14-0 all-time record against Pittsburgh. Nebraska is also putting its home success on the line, having won 45 consecutive home matches dating back to Dec 1, 2022. This weekend will also be the first time that the Huskers have played in the 15,500-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena.
