A woman in York County reported being involved in a collision, possibly with a deer, on Merrimac Trail.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — James City County police say two people were struck by a vehicle on Tuesday.

Police say emergency services responded to the scene near the 9300 block of Merrimac Trail for a report of two pedestrians hit by a vehicle around 7:40 p.m.

When they arrived, officers found a woman with injuries who informed them she and a man had been walking in the westbound lanes of Merrimac Trail when they were struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle continued driving and left the scene.

43-year-old Kenneth Jackson Jr. of Newport News was not found immediately due to the nature of the crash, police say. Officers found Jackson Jr. a few minutes later and initiated life-saving measures until Fire personnel took over. At 8:07 p.m., he was pronounced dead.

The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

At 7:44 p.m., a woman in York County called dispatch and reported being involved in a collision, possibly with a deer, on Merrimac Trail. Officers seized the vehicle after finding the damage to be consistent with the hit-and-run that left Jackson Jr. dead.

This incident is under investigation.
