CENTRAL POINT, Ore. – The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced it will not file charges in the June 2024 fatal stabbing in Central Point. According to the office, they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Edwin Poasa Galo was unjustified in using self-defense during the incident.

The altercation occurred on June 8, 2024, at the home of Edwin and Soteria Faaolataga Galo. Fuavaa Edmond Umu was found with multiple stab wounds and later died at the hospital. His brother, Edney Vena Umu, and Soteria Faaolataga Galo sustained injuries during the incident.

Investigations revealed that the brothers were aggressive towards Soteria, prompting Edwin to intervene. Edwin used a knife in self-defense, which led to Fuavaa’s fatal injuries. Despite extensive investigations, including interviews with over 20 individuals, clarity on the sequence of events was limited due to high intoxication levels and injuries.

The District Attorney’s Office concluded Edwin’s actions were reasonable under Oregon law to protect himself and his wife. They also could not identify who caused Soteria’s injuries, preventing further charges.
