PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Paterson five-year-old has died after drowning in a pool, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Paterson Police were notified that an unresponsive five-year-old boy Saturday who was brought to the Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, officials said.

Witnesses told police that shortly before 10 p.m., the child was found by family members “completely submerged underwater” in a pool at his residence around Marshall Street and Mary Street in Paterson. It was unclear how long he had been in the pool.

Doctors pronounced the boy dead at 10:02 p.m., according to authorities.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages five to 14, following motor vehicle accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the leading cause of death for children ages one to four.
