Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury Barracks responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash between a bicyclist and a truck near the intersection of Scott Highway and Church Street in the town of South Ryegate on Tuesday.Officials said the operator of an electric bicycle was Kathryn Mabey, 64, of Newbury, Vermont. CPR was immediately started on Mabey, who was unresponsive. Police said that Mabey was transported to Cottage Hospital in Haverhill, New Hampshire, where she was pronounced dead. Police said that the operator of the second vehicle was not hurt, but the vehicle had minimal front-end damage. Vermont State Police said that the initial investigation indicates that at the time of the crash, Mabey was trying to cross both lanes of traffic on her bicycle and into a parking lot. The vehicle involved was also was traveling down the same side of the road as Mabey when she began making her turn. The vehicle hit Mabey after attempting to swerve around her. This investigation is still ongoing, but neither impairment nor speed appear to be factors.
