COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff spoke publicly for the first time Thursday since he was charged several months ago with operating a vehicle while impaired.
McGuff served a two-week suspension following the incident back in May.
Dublin police responded to a report of a car driving recklessly and driving onto a lawn. Officers later found McGuff’s vehicle parked partially off his driveway and onto the grass.
Police body-camera footage showed officers approaching McGuff’s car, where he was cited for the OVI offense.
McGuff pleaded not guilty to the charge.
McGuff addressed the situation during a news conference Thursday.
“Really a horrible situation of which I take very seriously,” McGuff said. “To bring negativity to the university and the people involved in our program was a really, really terrible situation for me.”
“I feel really good about where I am and where the program is,” he added. “And I’m ready to move forward and hopefully have a great season.”
Following the incident, Ohio State suspended McGuff for two weeks as part of its internal disciplinary process. The coach has since returned to his team and is preparing for the upcoming season.
