POUGHKEEPSIE – The murder trial of Jan Michael Deere and Joseph Gonzalez began on Tuesday afternoon in Dutchess County Court. The two are accused of the death of Jaquan Fryar by shooting him in the head on March 30, 2024. Deere is the accused shooter and police say that after the victim was shot, Gonzalez began stomping on his head as he lay lifeless on the sidewalk.
Fryar was on life support until his passing on April 20, 2024.
Statements have been made that indicate Deere used Fryar’s gun and shot the him in self-defense during the encounter.
The trial is continuing this week before Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin.
